Methods and scripts for marine spatial planning in Brazil.
The PEM Project (Planejamento Espacial Marinho do Brasil, or Marine Spatial Planning for Brazil) is a brazilian national initiative focused on developing spatially explicit guidelines for the sustainable use and management of Brazil’s marine environment. It supports the implementation of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) across the country, integrating ecological, social, and economic dimensions of the ocean.
This repository hosts methodological notes and program scripts that ensure reproducibility of the mapping procedures applied in the PEM Sul Project (Southern Marine Spatial Plan, a branch of the nation-wide initiative). Also, the repository hosts key notes on more general information, referred as the PEM framework.
Each program script is designed to run as a standalone process, targeting specific stages of the PEM framework.

This website content is result from a team of experts discussions and works during 2024 and 2025 in southern Brazil. This initiative, carried out by Codex in partnership with the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and the Federal University of Santa Catarina, and supported with resources from the BNDES Project Structuring Fund (BNDES FEP), aims to support the technical studies necessary for implementing the pilot project of Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) in the Southern Marine Region of Brazil, covering the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul.

Esta iniciativa, executada pela Codex em parceria com a Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul e a Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, apoiada com recursos do Fundo de Estruturação de Projetos do BNDES (BNDES FEP), tem por objetivo apoiar o estudo técnico necessário à implantação do projeto-piloto de Planejamento Espacial Marinho (PEM) na Região Marinha do Sul do Brasil, englobando os estados do Paraná, Santa Catarina e Rio Grande do Sul.
